Las Facciones – Grupos (The Factions – Groups)

Estado: Desconocido.
Tipo: Pandilla de Minorías de Afrolatinos.
Ubicación: Roosevelt Island, Long Island City (Temporada 1).
Miembros Notables: Marcus, Alfonzo Creem.

Estado: Inactivo.
Tipo: Milicia. Ubicación: Red Hook, Brooklyn, Staten Island.
Miembros Notables: Dempsey, Mike Williams, Justine Feraldo, Frank Kowalski.

Director: Everett Barnes.
Empleados Conocidos: Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, Dra.

The Born

The Born is a group of vampires given mention in the Occido Lumen who are birthed rather than turned, making them dhampirs, hybrids or half-breeds. These dhampirs share some characteristics of humans, such as resistance to sunlight but in limited amounts and possessing no worms, hence not as vulnerable as other vampires or possessed by the Ancients.

If a vampire feeds on a pregnant woman, the baby will be turned into a creature similar to a vampire, but with a collection of very different traits. These so-called «dhampirs» are intelligent and have many of the traits of their mother’s infector, although they lack the worms in their blood. They also need to drink human blood. As a dhampir, this child shared many attributes of the vampire race, but not their vulnerability to sunlight or the blood worms.

By the time of the Outbreak, the only Born accounted for in the trilogy was Quinlan, who operated with a group of turned vampires in service of the other Ancients against the Master. The others accompanying him are described as having worms, hence full vampires:

«…No blood worms coursed beneath the surface of Quinlan’s translucent skin. All the old ones, including the other hunters, crawled with worms…»

From ‘The Fall’.

This setup appears consistent in the TV series, where the other vampires Quinlan scouted with remained shielded, except the leader of their group known as the Sun Hunters was named Vaun.

It is indicated that the Master was concerned or even intimidated by existence of the Born, namely Quinlan, and took stringent precautions to prevent further Borns from being created by forbidding vampires into the birthing barracks of concentration camps like Camp Liberty, reserved for pregnant women following the takeover of Night Zero.

Quinlan happened to be the fifth Born birthed in history, for which he was designated Quintus when named in Ancient Roman times (by the Master in the books; by Ancharia in the televised series.)

It is unclear whether the other Born were not involved in the happenings of the Strain events or were annihilated, leaving Quinlan as the last of them, since no mention in the trilogy has been made of the others outside of the Lumen.

Whatever their fates, the possibility of Born perishing with the deaths of their respective Ancient makers has not been made explicit in the books, so it remains open to speculation whether any could survive the aftermath of the Strain events.

El Primer Nacido con Gusanos en sus Manos

However, Quinlan asserts in the Season 3 television episode ‘First Born’ that he is on a suicide mission because when the master dies, he dies, which was revealed to be an assumption in the following episode, «Gone But Not Forgotten» when he confesses upon revival after seemingly dispatching the Master «one only has one chance to prove such a theory».

The Born seem protected from corruption by birth yet capable of becoming corrupted as Quinlan did at the end of the trilogy, no longer free agents. In the comic version of ‘The Night Eternal’, Quinlan was decapitated by the Master instead of being corrupted, reminiscing the fate met by the Silver Angel.

In contrast to the trilogy, the Born is shown to be impervious to the worms in the ‘First Born’ flashback scene where Quinlan’s hands become worm-covered to no effect while fighting strigoi.

It is unknown, whether «The Born» have normal human genitalia but due to the fact that Quinlan was identified as male at birth it seems very likely. In the earlier part of Quinlan’s life, the reason why he could not claim a woman as his own, was his inability to sire children, which in no way was an indication that he could not partake in sex.

However, there is indication that like strigoi, he cannot procreate. Another fact that seems to support this theory is that Quinlan was given a wife and they enjoyed ‘»intimacy» together. With all these facts, it is believed that «The Born» have a mix of Human and Vampire sexual characteristics, but like other hybrids such as mules are sterile.

Eldritch Palmer’s multi-billion dollar company. Its latest venture is six fully funded nuclear power plants. Everything this company does whether it’s obvious or not (generally not) is to keep Palmer alive.

It has afforded him a new heart, pancreas, kidneys and three livers all with the aid of in-house doctors, nurses and medical equipment. The company is his «Tree of Life» until he gets what he has truly been waiting for, the reason all of these events have been set into motion in the first place.

The Sapphires

Leader: Alfonzo Creem. Status: Unknown.
Type: Minority Gang (Blacks & Latinos).
Location: Roosevelt Island, Long Island City (Season 1).
Notable Members: Marcus, Alfonzo Creem.

Nothing is known about the life of Alfonzo’s gang members before the outbreak. It’s possible that they did bidding and reposession before the pandemic happened. In «The Strain» the gang used to live and do criminal activity in Long Island City.

But when the outbreak started they began to steal high priced valuables like paintings, diamonds, watches, and other expensive items including the Occido Lumen. They are now stationed at Roosevelt Island using the abandoned church as a make-shift auction house for the bidding war between Setrakian and Palmer. On the island, they are blaring loud rap music and a roadblock manned by sentries, controlling access to the island.

Killed Victims: Numerous amounts of vampires and unnamed people.

New York Safe Streets Initiative

Leader: Justine Feraldo. Status: Inactive.
Type: Militia. Location: Red Hook, Brooklyn, Staten Island.
Notable Members: Dempsey, Mike Williams, Justine Feraldo, Frank Kowalski.

New York Safe Streets Initiative is a militia created by Justine Feraldo. The militia is composed of police officers and community volunteers from neighborhoods all over New York. Their objective is to clear the streets of Vampire (Strigoi) . The militia are able to resolve the threat by aiming for the brain stem.

A mandatory evacuation is imposed preceding the sweep, before residents are allowed to return back to their homes. As of the Third Season, almost half of Manhattan is cleared. As of the end of Season 3 it is most likely the organization became disbanded and fled with the New York Police Department to Albany, New York.

Killed Victims: Numerous counts of Vampires and infected people.

The Canary Project (CDC)

Type: Government Facility/Unit of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Location: W. 27th Street, Manhattan, NY (HQ: Atlanta). Director: Dr. Everett Barnes.
Inhabitants: Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, Dr. Nora Martinez & Jim Kent.

The Canary project is a rapid-response team of field epidemiologists organized to detect and identify incipient biological threats. Its purview included both naturally occurring threats, such as viral and rickettsial diseases found in nature, and man-made outbreaks—although most of their funding came thanks to Canary’s obvious bioterrorism implications.

New York City was the nerve center, with smaller, university hospital-based satellite Canaries facilities stood up in Miami, Los Angeles, Denver, and Chicago.

The program drew its name from the old coal miner’s trick of bringing a caged canary underground as a crude yet efficient biological early warning system. The bright yellow bird’s highly sensitive metabolism detected methane and carbon monoxide gas traces before they reached toxic or even explosive levels, causing the normally chirpy creature to fall silent and sway on its perch.

In this modern age, every human being had the potential to be that sentinel canary. Eph’s team’s job was to isolate them once they stopped singing, treat the infected, and contain the spread.

New York Police Department

Leader: Justine Feraldo. Status: Disbanded.
Type: Law Enforcement Agency. Location: Coverage includes Manhattan; Queens; Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Pre-Outbreak, New York Police Department was established in 1845 and is the largest municipal police force in the United States, having primary responsibilities in law enforcement and investigation within the five boroughs of New York City.

The New York Police Department has a broad array of specialized services, including the Emergency Service Unit, K9, harbor patrol, air support, bomb disposal, counter-terrorism, criminal intelligence, anti-gang, anti-organized crime, narcotics, public transportation and public housing; the New York City Transit Police and New York City Housing Authority Police Department were fully integrated into the NYPD in 1995.

According to the department, its mission is to «enforce the laws, preserve the peace, reduce fear, and provide for a safe environment.» The department’s regulations are compiled in title 38 of the New York City Rules.

Post-Outbreak, In «The Strain» the police officers seem to have increased call activity thoughout the city due to the vampire presence. In «The Strain» the NYPD seems to be overwhelmed as seen in the episodes «Fort Defiance» ,»Dead End»,»The Disappeared».

As Justine Feraldo, Mayor George Lyle and the other council members had discussed about «People with six foot snakes in their mouth» killed their neighbours everynight.

Justine Feraldo had discussed about how the National Guard were missing and she said that only some of them were guarding goverment offices so Justine Feraldo decided to use the NYPD and ESU to take back some parts of New York City such as Staten island, and Red Hook, Brooklyn and possibly Upper Manhattan.

Justine Feraldo had police officers and HazMat (Hazardous Materials) teams stationed at the St. George Ferry Terminal as well as checkpoints at Van Brunt Street in Red Hook with armed NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU) police officers.

The Disbandment: Captain James Bonner has told Justine Feraldo and Frank Kowalski that he and the entire law enforcement agency are overwhelmed by strigoi. He says that all of vampires has broken through their safe zones and tells them they are running out of food and ammunation to fight back.

Captain James Bonner suggest that everyone should retreat to Saratoga Springs near Albany he also mentions that the city has enough soldiers to fight the strigoi. Captain James Bonner shakes Justine Feraldo’s hand right before he and many police officers exit the city.
